Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Step 1: Combine blueberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Step 2: Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the blueberries begin to soften and release their juices (about 5-7 minutes).
- Step 3: If using cornstarch, whisk 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering blueberry mixture, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Step 4: Continue to simmer for 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer for a longer time.
- Step 5: Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract (if using).
- Step 6: Allow the sauce to cool slightly before serving. It can be served warm or cold.
Notes
- Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- For a smoother texture, gently reheat the sauce over low heat, stirring frequently, to avoid scorching.
- Drizzle this luscious blueberry sauce over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, or yogurt for a burst of fruity flavor.
- For a richer, more intense blueberry flavor, gently mash some of the blueberries before adding them to the saucepan.
