Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 envelopes (4 teaspoons) unflavored gelatin
- ¼ cup cold water
- Berry coulis or caramel sauce (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: Bloom the gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes to soften.
- Step 2: Heat the cream mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is just simmering (do not boil).
- Step 3: Incorporate gelatin: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm cream mixture and stir until it is completely dissolved. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Step 4: Pour and chill: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into individual serving ramekins or glasses. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, until set.
- Step 5: Serve: To serve, gently run a thin knife around the edge of the panna cotta before inverting it onto a plate (optional). Top with your favorite berry coulis, caramel sauce, or fresh berries.
Notes
- Store leftover panna cotta in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, covered tightly with plastic wrap.
- For a perfectly smooth reheating experience, gently microwave individual servings for short intervals, stirring until warm.
- Elevate your panna cotta by adding a crunchy element like toasted nuts or crumbled biscotti alongside your chosen sauce.
- To prevent lumps, ensure the gelatin is fully bloomed and completely dissolved in the warm cream mixture before pouring into the ramekins.
